about

Inspired by the story of Jim Bradley, a lieutenant with the Sappers during the Second World War and one of only 5 men to survive a daring escape from a Japanese PoW camp. Andy first heard about his story through an episode of Ray Mears’ Extreme Survival called “Jungle”.
Jim was one of many British soldiers captured by the Japanese and held captive for 14 months in Changi jail. Conditions were so horrendous in the camp, the men knew they would need to escape to stand any chance of survival. A group of 10 men succeeded in this, and their escape led them on a gruelling 8-week journey through The Jungle.
There were no paths, so they had to hack their way through the dense jungle of bamboo and trees; all of the time just focusing on heading west. After 5 weeks they were out of food, most were badly crippled by the constant wet conditions, and all were physically drained by the constant barrage of blood sucking leeches.
They were eventually found by a group of Burmese hunters who betrayed the group, selling them back to the Japanese.
Bradley was one of only 5 to survive the epic escape attempt. The Japanese had such respect for their efforts and their achievement that they spared them execution when they were recaptured.

lyrics

Captured, enslaved in a bamboo cage
Living in constant fear
Taken by guns from the rising sun
Gotta get away from here

Oh, onwards we tread, soon to be dead
The spirits of these brave men

Oh, onwards we go to find our way home
In the jungle we fight to survive
Oh, onwards we go, death will be slow
In the jungle we fight to survive

As we make our way, our problems begin
White men can't live out here
Hard on our tails, will our heroes prevail
Death always seems so near

Oh, onwards we tread, we'll honour the dead
The spirits of these brave men

Oh, onwards we go to find our way home
In the jungle we fight to survive
Oh, onwards we go, death will be slow
In the jungle we fight to survive
